- Gaviniés (Gavaniès), François, b. about 1700. Lived first at Bordeaux, but about 1730 moved to Paris with his son, and was living in rue St.-Thomas-du-Louvre, 1734-63. He made two very different kinds of instruments; the one inferior, the other, for which he used varnish and wood of good quality, was much liked. He generally branded them with his name. Instruments dated 1734, 1735, and 1751; also a six-stringed viol dated 1744 in the Paris Conservatoire Collection, are known. The Conservatoire also has, for the use of its pupils, one of his double-basses with the head sculptured to represent King David; its tone is excellent, it was made in 1757. Label: "Gaviniés, rue St-Thomas-du-Louvre, à Paris, 1734." He had a son, Pierre, the celebrated violinist.
- Gedler, Johann Anthony and Johann Benedict. Two brothers who worked together in Fussen, Bavaria, about 1750 to 1796. They made inferior instruments.

Record note
Nothing on this site confirms this record beyond what one or more sources state, and that is the whole basis for it: A dictionary of violin makers (1890); A dictionary of violin makers (1890); A dictionary of violin makers (1896); Old violins (1905). Entries from 3 books stand under this name, and the software judged them likely the same person. Tell us if that is wrong and we will split the record. No claim beyond that has been invented here, which leaves the record not established; tell us if you can change that.

How the pages were read
4 of the 4 lines here were read from machine text (software that turns a photo of a page into words), not by a person looking at the page image. 2 of them rest on a section heading above a list of names, not on a trade word printed on their own line: “A DICTIONARY OF VIOLIN MAKERS.”, “DICTIONARY OF VIOLIN MAKERS”.
