- Ugar, Crescenzio. A maker in Rome in 1790. His work is German in character, he used brown varnish.
- Ungarini, Antonio. Was working in Fabriano in 1762.
- Unverdorben, Marx. A lute maker in Venice, probably about 1400-50. A lute of highly finished workmanship, found in the Collection of instruments at Castle Eisenberg, Bohemia, was inscribed: "Marx Unverdorben a Venetia."
- Urquhart, Thomas. A maker in London about 1650-80; he was probably a Scotchman. His work resembles that of Jacob Rayman, with whom he may have worked, and shows great merit for the period at which he lived. His violins are of two sizes, some on a small, others on a large pattern, very arched, the corners not very prominent, the purfling narrow and placed close to the edge; the oil varnish, of a yellowish-brown or sometimes red colour, is of excellent quality, and is similar to Italian varnish; the tone is clear and silvery. His violins and violas are rare, and no violoncello of his has been seen.

Record note
What this record rests on is A dictionary of violin makers (1890); A dictionary of violin makers (1890); A dictionary of violin makers (1896); Die Geigen und Lautenmacher vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart (1922), naming this maker and nothing more. Entries from 3 books stand under this name, and the software judged them likely the same person. Tell us if that is wrong and we will split the record. Nothing else on this site confirms it and no claim has been invented beyond that naming — not established, until someone can tell us more.

How the pages were read
4 of the 4 lines here were read from machine text (software that turns a photo of a page into words), not by a person looking at the page image. 1 of them rests on a section heading above a list of names, not on a trade word printed on its own line: “A DICTIONARY OF VIOLIN MAKERS.”.
