Record details

Da Capo Press reissue, not the 1925 Carl Fischer printing. The publisher field states "New York, Da Capo Press", read from this scan's own series page ("Da Capo Press Music Titles — Frederick Freedman, General Editor — University of California at Los Angeles"), but Da Capo Press was not founded until the 1960s, so the date this record previously carried (1925, the repository's catalogue metadata, copied from the original Carl Fischer printing) is impossible for this printing and is corrected to n.d. This scan's cover (blue cloth, no visible title) and half-title ("AN ENCYCLOPEDIA / OF THE VIOLIN", reset type) differ from the two Carl Fischer copies (`an-encyclopedia-of-the-violin-1925-fe56e9`, `an-encyclopedia-of-the-violin-1926`), confirming a later reissue rather than a third copy of the original. The imprint/copyright leaf (title verso, leaf 7-8) was not among the harvested leaves, so no year for this specific reissue could be read; per lesson bb-071 a reprint under a different imprint counts as its own edition even though its own date is unconfirmed. Read from the harvested leaves 9 September 2026 (M6). Kind, evidence grade, author and the shortened note form still to be completed by hand from the volume.

Rights basis
Public domain by hand: a Da Capo Press reissue of Bachmann's 1925 text, read by hand 9 September 2026. The verso of the half-title reads "Da Capo Press Music Titles — Frederick Freedman, General Editor — University of California at Los Angeles"; the half-title itself is reset type, not a photostat of the Carl Fischer setting, but no harvested leaf carries a new introduction, foreword or other added authorial matter — a reprint of the 1925 text, not a revision of it. A College of the Desert library card (leaf0003) gives the call number "ML 800 B13 1975", a plausible but unconfirmed cataloguing or printing year, not a read title-page imprint date; the imprint/copyright leaf itself was not among the harvested leaves. A reprint reproducing an already-published text without new copyrightable matter carries that text's own public-domain status regardless of the reprint's own unconfirmed date. Assessed by hand, owner ruling 9 Sep 2026 (REVIEW.md), because source-basis.py had no second witness on disk.

What rests on this source

Everyone this source names

This document prints 560 names. A name found this way is the weakest thing this site records: the book names the person, and nothing more is said. It is not a line in a record — the lines that actually rest on this source are listed above, each with its own confidence. 492 of the names below reach a record on this site; lines from this source have been written for 214. The rest are names and nothing else — which is an honest description of the evidence, and an invitation: if you know one of these makers, we want to hear from you.
