INTRODUCTORY.
The seventeenth edition of R L Polk & Co's Des Moines City and Valley Junction Directory herewith presented to its patrons, has been prepared with the same care which characterized former editions. Not only was the canvass performed faithfully and accurately, but every individual whose name appeared in last year's Directory has been accounted for, and it is believed that the present edition will be found a model of completeness and accuracy. Among the new features incorporated in this issue may be mentioned a complete Street guide and Directory of Householders. The streets are given in alphabetical order and described by giving the point of commencement and ending of each street and its line of general direction. The number on each building on the street is given in numerical order and opposite such number is placed the name of the occupant. The names of all intersecting streets are given in the order of their occurrence, whereby the "between streets" of all house numbers may be readily found, making a street directory complete in all its parts.
POPULATION.
This volume of the Directory contains 46,540 names. After deducting firms, Corporations, Institutions, etc., and multiplying by 2 1/2 the figures that is found to most accurately represent the names of women and children not included in the canvass—we have a
POPULATION of 104,715
Increase over last edition 1940.
Attention is called to the fact that the section embraced in this calculation is not confined to the incorporated limits of the City, but includes the adjacent territory, which by reason of its situation and the employment of its residents is as much a part of the City as though it was within the corporate limits.
A Library Directory of all the principal Cities of the country is maintained at our offices 717-718 Iowa Loan and Trust Building for the free use of our patrons. In addition to the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable Library, our "Exchange System," which places the Des Moines City Directory in all Directory Libraries throughout the country serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous City, for no other publication can convey such an idea of the City, its growth, its people with their trades and professions; its schools, churches, societies, banks, railroads and incorporated companies and all the various institutions and organizations.—This wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Directory annually records.
