1PREFACE.
3In the face of the conflicting rules promulgated by eminent violinists, the author disclaims any desire to finally settle the questions discussed in the following pages. On the contrary, preferring truth to dogmatism, he would be willing to see all the positions contained in them exploded, if the cause of the violin would be thereby advanced. A blind acceptance of statements relating to violin-playing is, indeed, not desirable: the student in this department of education would do better to act upon the motto "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." If the present work induce such of its readers as have a practical acquaintance with the instrument to follow this recommendation, it will do good service to the cause in question.
