CARLO BERGONZI, CREMONA, 1723
Number 7190. On the death of Stradivarius, his sons succeeded him in business and occupied his famous house which faced the square in the city of Cremona. But it was Carlo Bergonzi, his greatest pupil, upon whom the mantle of Stradivarius' fame descended.
"As fine as a Strad" is a term that has always been used as the standard of comparison; yet it is generally conceded that the masterpieces by Bergonzi are, with full cognizance of all that it implies, entitled to the distinction of this, the ultimate comparison.
This violin has for many years been regarded by experts as among the finest known examples of Bergonzi's art. It belongs to that epoch in Bergonzi's activities during which were produced those wonderful instruments that have placed him on a par with Stradivarius and Guarnerius and distinguished him as one of the three greatest luthiers of all time. It is not definitely known when he left the Stradivarius establishment and opened a shop of his own, but doubtless it was about 1720.
The workmanship and varnishing of this Bergonzi are of the choicest description known to the maker. The back is formed of one piece of the finest curly maple, a handsome figure extending across its breadth. The sides match the back and the front is of spruce of even, straight grain and of that superb quality invariably selected by Bergonzi. The varnish is a deep ruby red; it is a thick, heavy coat, entirely original.
In preservation this superb instrument is practically as it left Bergonzi's hands. The tone possesses the utmost purity, sweetness and power.
