17Number 8143. Walter E. Colton. Date 1880. A most beautiful reproduction of the Gaspar Da Salo of the famous violinist, Ole Bull. The name of this famous violinist is to be seen upon the ticket within the instrument. The top is of spruce of fine grain. This piece of wood was taken from the Church of Santa Grace, of Florence. The back is of two pieces of handsome curly maple with sides to match. This wood was taken from a double bass which was the work of the well-known maker, Gabrielli of Florence. The bass had been made in the year 1743. This faithful copy was made by Mr. Colton at the request of Ole Bull himself. The scroll is very handsome and the varnish is of a lovely orange-red color. The tone is of a very mellow quality. There is an interesting mahogany case with the violin that Ole Bull had made in New York for the instrument. The tone of this violin is exceptionally fine.
