11The reason for this is that the pupil must first feel his way in the lower region of the violin, and after moving up and down through the various positions, he will at the proper time acquire the skill of changing freely and evenly. Scales in the compass of three octaves begin uniformly with the second finger from upwards, and consistently change once on the A string, whilst in descending the best results will be achieved by changing once on the E and A strings, thus bringing the player back to the original position. Not only does this obviate two consecutive changes on the E string, (coming down) but the increased smoothness which this fingering gives, is also a point in its favour.
