CHAPTER IX
THE EVOLUTION OF THE ART OF VIOLIN PLAYING
There is but one art, or school of violin playing, and that is the Italian school founded by Arcangelo Corelli, and from which all other schools are derived.
The number of violinists who have made an actual, historical impress on the development of the art of violin playing is very small. They will be found in the following list:
Arcangelo Corelli ………………………………………….. 1653—1713
Giuseppe Tartini …………………………………………….. 1692—1770
Gaetano Pugnani …………………………………………….. 1727—1803
Pietro Nardini ………………………………………………… 1722—1793
Pietro Locatelli ………………………………………………. 1693—1764
Nicolò Paganini ……………………………………………… 1784—1840
Pierre Rode …………………………………………………… 1774—1830
Jean-Baptiste Viotti ………………………………………… 1753—1824
Ludwig Spohr …………………………………………………. 1784—1859
Rodolphe Kreutzer ………………………………………….. 1766—1861
Charles de Bériot ……………………………………………. 1802—1870
Henri Vieuxtemps …………………………………………… 1820—1881
Henri Wieniawski …………………………………………… 1835—1880
Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst ……………………………………… 1814—1865
Pablo de Sarasate …………………………………………… 1844—1908
August Wilhelmj …………………………………………….. 1845—1908
Would it be possible to find a more difficult question for consideration than that of determining exactly who the actual founders or creators of the art of violin playing were? At first glance it seems simple enough, but in reality it is very complex.
Yet, as regards actual "creators" of schools in violin playing, there are but two names to be mentioned: those of Corelli and Tartini, and their standing as founders of "schools" of violin playing was, so to speak, established by Gaetano Pugnani, who was the pupil of both. Pugnani in turn, was the teacher of Viotti.
And now let us see which masters of the instrument may be traced back to Viotti, as wonderful a teacher as he was a violinist. The list is a distinguished one. It includes de Bériot, who was the teacher of Vieuxtemps; Kreutzer, who taught Lafont and also Bazzini the violin; Rode, who instructed Mayseder and Böhm, as well as many other great artists who, carrying on the teachings and traditions handed down to them, justify my opinion that the
