Play the four first measures with tenderness and somewhat of abandon; the remaining measures anticipate the energetic period which follows.
Play the eighth notes as indicated,
with great vigor and marked rhythm.
Period of Twelve Measures
Play without hurrying, and with great clarity and contrast in shading.
This passage should be played with a flowing tone and with great calmness. From measure 5 to measure 8 play on the fingerboard.
Period of Four Measures
Play this period reverting to tempo little by little, bringing out the martelé or "hammered" notes with the fingers of the left hand.
Use the whole bow, and accent delicately, yet with precision.
There is a difference of opinion with regard to this passage, that is, as to the manner in which the chords should be varied. The question is one which should be submitted to the judgment of authorities, who, however, one should remember, are in no wise agreed on such questions.
Beginning with the fourth measure, and up to the end of the period, a strongly marked crescendo should be made, a crescendo which gradually attains to fortissimo.
The first note of each beat should be lengthened a little; at the second beat of the fifth measure the original text of the composition should be followed.
