these great works of art. It would require an entire volume to even mention only by name the thousands of amateur quartets which have been formed in Europe, most of whom have met for years at least once or even oftener each week to study religiously the pages of Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven et al. written for four stringed instruments. We will therefore undertake to deal in these pages only with those organizations which have won international fame in the performance of chamber music, listing their names alphabetically, and presenting the essential facts regarding their artistic careers.
ARMINGAUD QUARTET. Was composed of Jules Armingaud, Leon Jacquard, Edouard Lalo and Mas. From 1820 to 1900 it won an enviable reputation for the technical perfection and musical beauty of its performance, and later, by adding wind instruments, it achieved an equally great reputation under the name "Société Classique."
BOHEMIAN QUARTET. Was composed of Karel Hofmann, Joseph Suk, Oskar Nedbal and Hanus Wihan. Of all the quartets which have toured Europe, none has achieved the success of this organization. Its performances of the Beethoven and other classical quartets are the acme of perfection, while their renditions of modern quartets by Smetana, Dvorak and Brahms are full of fire and virility.
BOLOGNA QUARTET. Was composed of F. Sarti, A. Massarenti, A. Consolini and F. Serato. Chamber music in Italy did not flourish up to 1862 when A. Bosevi, the editor of a music magazine, founded this quartet which gained an enviable reputation for the interpretation of master chamber works.
BRODSKY QUARTET. Was composed of Adolf Brodsky, O. Novacek, Hans Sitt and L. Grutzmacher. It was at first a private undertaking but achieved such immediate and remarkable success as to be engaged for the Imperial Quartet. Brodsky was an exceptional leader, understanding how to bring out equally well the thoughts of Beethoven and the naïve humor of Haydn.
BRUSSELS QUARTET. Was composed of Franz Schorg, H. Daucher, P. Miry, and J. Gaillard. The playing of this quartet was highly regarded from both the standpoints of intonation and musical feeling.
BUDAPEST QUARTET. Was composed of Jeno Hubay, V. von Herzfeld, J. Waldbauer and David Popper. This ensemble was of such a character as to lead Johannes Brahms to say that it was the best string quartet he had ever heard.
CAPET QUARTET. Was composed of Lucien Capet, Tourret, Casadesus and Hasselmanns. A French quartet which has developed an ensemble calling forth enthusiastic encomium from both critics and the music loving public.
COLOGNE (GÜRZENICH) QUARTET. Composed of Willy Hess, Willy Seibert, Joseph Schwarz and Friedrich Grutzmacher. The leader of this quartet, Willy Hess, is a violinist and musician of the highest musical caliber and the performances of this quartet under his guidance have elicited the heartiest commendation from critics as well as the music loving public.
DANNREUTHER QUARTET. Was composed of Gustav Dannreuther, E. Schenk, O. Schill and J. Kovarik. This quartet is much older than the Kneisel quartet, its leader being a brother of the celebrated pianist, Edward Dannreuther, who for many years conducted regular chamber music soirées in London. For many years it was the means of advancing the appreciation of chamber music throughout the United States.
DRESDEN QUARTET. Was composed of J. Lauterbach, K. Hullweck, G. Goring and Fr. Grutzmacher. This quartet was in great favor with the King of Saxony, himself a musician of real attainments. It performed more than sixty times in his presence.
DUESBURG QUARTET. Was composed of August Duesburg, H. Matlocha, R. Pirschl and O. Krist. This quartet was one of the first to popularize chamber music concerts by making the price of admission very low and by giving com
