46In recording music of any description on the phonograph a serious difficulty is experienced in that, as a record can only run for a very short period unless made in an unwieldy size, compositions must either be selected which are comparatively short, or double-sided records made, necessitating a break in the performance of the composition and a consequent interruption of the musical thought it conveys. In this respect the player piano possesses a decided advantage because the length of rolls is practically unlimited.
48This is probably the reason why so few violin records have been made of movements from the great classic and modern concertos and sonatas which would bring so much pleasure to the music lover. Whether this difficulty will be overcome is a scientific problem which is undoubtedly being worked upon by laboratory experts—in the meantime it is interesting to note that the Bach "Concerto in D Minor" for two violins has been recorded by the Victor Company, interpreted by Kreisler and Zimbalist; also that the English branch of the Victor Company has recorded the Beethoven Concerto (played by Isolde Menges with orchestral accompaniment) using five double-sided twelve-inch records. It might be well to mention that all the records in the above list which are initialed "HMV" are procurable in the United States through any regular Victor dealer.
