1Violins: Continued
372 SAMUEL GILKES: MAKER. London, 1815 (1787-1827).
4With the original label. Shows Amati influence.
5Length 23 3/8.
6Length of body, 13 13/16. With case.
7Tone quality excellent. Finish from golden amber to light ruby, soft as velvet to the touch.
9The work of Samuel Gilkes has always been greatly appreciated by the best judges; there is not a great deal of it (he died young, aged 40), but he is accounted in England one of the best Violin makers. He worked with William Forster, "Old Forster," the greatest violin maker in a family of violin-makers, and one of the greatest of all the British makers.
11The Italian influence is shown in this violin by the gradual and almost imperceptible diminution from the scallop down to the first turn opposite the throat, just as in the best old Italian Masters.
1373 JOSEPH GUARNERIUS "DEL GESU:" Maker. 1698-1744.
14"A Prince of Violin Makers;" the greatest of the Family.
15A very early example: The wood is heavy and plain; the back is of Sycamore.
1774 GAETANO GUADAGNINI: Maker. Turin, 1750.
18A Superb example of this great Maker.
19Beautiful golden brown varnish.
2175 HIERONYMUS AND ANTONIUS AMATI: Makers. 1617.
22The sons of Andreas Amati; their violins produced jointly are considered the best.
23This remarkable violin: A solo instrument of the first class carries the original tag. Known as the Ford Amati.
24Golden red varnish, mottled from wear.
2676 ALLESANDRO GAGLIANO: Maker. Naples, 1640-1720.
27A beautiful specimen by a great Master. He became a violin maker by accident; having killed a man in a duel in Naples, he fled to Cremona and worked with Stradivarius.
28Finished in pale golden brown varnish.
3077 JOSEPH GUADAGNINI: Maker. 1736-1805.
31A remarkable violin of the "slender-model" type; the owner has receipted bill showing it was sold in 1914 for $700.
3378 ANDREAS GEISSELBERTA: Maker. Early 18th Century.
34The tutor of Joseph Guarnerius "del Gesu."
35For many years this violin was called a Guarnerius; it is a grand old Solo instrument in a reddish brown varnish.
37Sometime before 1825 it was owned in Philadelphia. A violinist, a member of the String Band, offered $200 in gold for it, but the offer was refused.
