Preliminary Note
In offering the various groups of Art Objects and Books which comprise this sale, we call particular attention to:
(1) Thirty-two Violins. (Nos. 53-84). All in playing condition.
A group which embraces works of the Masters only. They are offered by Private Collectors, one of whom for more than twenty-five years has specialized in violins of tonal merit.
They have been listed by Experts (not mere guessers); as Experts have found them and believe them to be. They are not guaranteed, and therefore no dispute can arise as an aftermath of the sale. The violins will stand on their merits; they will bear all honest criticism, and the sale offers opportunities to acquire fine old instruments, such as may not occur again at the present depression prices.
They include makers from Italy: "Cremona-Amati," as Haweis has written, "there is melody in the very words"; Nicolo Amati, the star of that great family; Stradivarius, perhaps the greatest of them all, whose name is known all over the civilized world; Joseph Guadagnini; "Guarnerius del Gesu." the "Prince of Violin Makers"; the Brothers Gagliano; the Brothers Amati; and the English Samuel Gylkes, 1815; the French Lupot, Vuillaume, and Panormo of Paris, 1791.
(2) The Color-Prints of the late George Leonard, of Northampton, Mass., a connoisseur of many years' standing.
Here will be offered Hiroshige's kakemono "River Gorge in Snow"; a very fine "Kambara Evening Snow"; a Kyonaga Triptych, Harunobu's "Girls Gathering Iris," etc.
(3) The Contents will show varied interests:
Netsukes, Swords and Sword-Guards (Nos. 85, etc.); Stencils (154-159); Ivory; Fine English Chair in the style of Chippendale (150); a slim young girl in Chinese ivory (134); an ancient Egyptian pottery figure of a Woman (130); a Cyprian glass tear-bottle dating to the Birth of Christ (129); a handsome pair of Small European Bronzes (139).
The Art Library, with outstanding items, as a First Edition of Conder's "Landscape Gardening in Japan" (15); Hokusai's "[address hidden] of Fuji," First edition (18); Holme's "English Water-Colour," complete in 8 parts (8); Children's Books (23-25); Gaine's N.
