8PHILIBERT, the proprietor of the Little Café, discovers that ALBERT LORIFLAN, one of his waiters, is about to inherit a title and a million francs. The wily PHILIBERT schemes to defraud ALBERT out of a portion of his inheritance; and with this end in view, he inveigles the waiter into signing a contract whereby he binds himself to remain in PHILIBERT's employ for twenty years, or else forfeit a large sum of money. When ALBERT learns of his inheritance, however, he surprises the guileful PHILIBERT by staying on as a waiter and thus evading payment of the forfeit. While he thus continues as an humble servant in the daytime, ALBERT none the less enjoys his inheritance, for at night he forthwith begins to lead the gay life, and becomes involved in sundry love affairs. His most prominent inamorata is GABY GAUFRETTE, who is known as the "Queen of the All-night Restaurants." ALBERT also has a jealous admirer in the person of KATZIOLINKA, an Hungarian café chanteuse—but the real lady of his heart is YVONNE, the daughter of none other than PHILIBERT himself. At first YVONNE has spurned ALBERT, but she grows to love him; when their engagement is announced PHILIBERT is perforce constrained to release the young man from his contract, and peace thereupon returns to the Little Café. Especially notable among the many songs of this piece are: "Serve the Cavaire," "Thy Mouth is a Rose," and "Just Because It's You."
