3There are two flourishing daily and several weekly newspapers. Although it were almost vain to attempt to particularize individual enterprise, we cannot but note a few of the most prominent in the array of energetic and reliable firms of the city. Of these we would mention the firm of Beede, Burrows & Co., wholesale grocers, tea and tobacco dealers, one of those reliable and energetic business houses that are indeed a rarity; as great a variety and extensive stock of goods as they possess is never met with outside of metropolitan cities. Those who purchase from them can rest assured of being suited.
5Among the lumber firms of the city we would commend the old and favorably known firm of Otto & Sons, at whose Liberty Saw and Planing Mills they manufacture their well known mellow pine lumber, so favorably spoken of by builders in all sections of the country.
7The machine works and foundry of the Valley Iron Works, W. P. Riley, superintendent, whose steam engines, boilers, self-closing patent canal bridges, &c., are so favorably known that commendation here is unnecessary.
9Williams & Forseman, are recognized as one of the leading lumber firms of the country, as their large and increasing business amply testifies. Merriman & Sons, who manufacture lumber of all kinds, together with laths and pickets. Charles Scheffel, largely engaged in the same business, is widely known as a thorough business man. T. U. Thompson, manufacturer of boxes and planing mill work. L. C. Kinyon and Thomas Duffy, shingle manufactures, has the reputation of turning out none but first-class work.
