BROOKLYN
"New York City's Greatest Borough"
The facts and statistics of Brooklyn's industrial and commercial development, as well as its community of homes, well justify its slogan of "New York City's Greatest Borough." Besides including the geographical center of the city, Brooklyn is also the most populous of all the boroughs.
Originally, Brooklyn was a group of small Dutch settlements which survived despite frequent attacks by Indians. It was largely agricultural until permanent means of transportation and communication were established across the East River. The borough played a prominent part in the American Revolution and in other wars in which this country was engaged.
Today, Brooklyn, besides being known as a city of homes, is the nation's foreign trade center, one of its largest and most varied industrial communities, and a commercial establishment outranking all but a few of the country's cities. Yet, despite its huge size, its position entitles it to look forward to a greater and even more important growth in the future.
