11JOSEPH CONTRERAS, MADRID, ABOUT 1740
12Number 5149. Contreras was the greatest of Spanish makers, and, inasmuch as he served his apprenticeship in Italy, his violins are, to all intents and purposes, Italian. The work and model are strongly indicative of the Guadagnini school of violin making. His pattern is broad and flat. The wood used is the very best and the varnish of exceptionally fine Italian quality, rich in color and soft in texture. The tone of this violin is exceptionally beautiful, combining great power and remarkable tenderness. It is a splendid solo violin. It is in an exceptionally fine state of preservation.
