VIOLONCELLOS
CARLO BERGONZI, CREMONA, ABOUT 1733
Number 5152. The violoncellos of Carlo Bergonzi, in the opinion of concert 'cellists and experts, rank second only to those of the famous master, Antonius Stradivarius. Their large volume and richness of tone makes them peculiarly desirable for the modern concert stage.

The pattern of this instrument is broad and flat, of medium large size and full string length. It is covered with orange red varnish of the richest description. Bergonzi's selection of wood for this instrument was particularly fortunate, for it would be difficult, indeed, to find wood capable of better tone production. Its tone has every quality sought by a critical artist.

GIOFREDA CAPPA, SALUZZO, 1696
Number 4925. Cappa was one of the greatest cello makers of Italy. He was a pupil of Nicolas Amati, working in the shop during his apprenticeship with Antonius Stradivarius and other famous pupils. This cello is a first class representative specimen of his work. It is in excellent state of preservation, being sound and healthy in all its original varnish and parts. It possesses a tone of rare loveliness, as well as power.

It is an ideal solo instrument for an artist. The back is formed by two pieces of maple, having a slight figure joined in the center. The sides are of the same material. The scroll is in Cappa's finest style. The top is of spruce, of the choicest selection. It formerly was the property of a very celebrated artist, Boris Hambourg, who used it in his concert tours for years.
