1FOREWORD
3At the request of the Superintendent, Madras Government Museum, two years back, I began re-arranging the Section on Musical Instruments in the Ethnological Gallery. At the conclusion of the work, the Superintendent suggested to me the idea of preparing a descriptive catalogue for the section and this book is the outcome of that suggestion. I am deeply indebted to him for the valuable assistance he gave me at all times. I have also derived much help from Diwan Bahadur K. Rangachariar, the former Ethnological Assistant and Mr. A. Aiyappan, the present Ethnological Assistant.
5In the preparation of this book, I have consulted Captain Day's "Music and Musical Instruments of Southern India and the Deccan", Dr. Meerwarth's "Musical Instruments in the Calcutta Museum", Rev. Popley's "Music of India", Atiya Begum Fyzee Rahamin's "Music of India" and Ethel Rosenthal's "Indian Music and Its Instruments."
