147. CASSINO, Antonio. Modena. But little known. (w)
248. CASTELLO, Paolo. Genoa, 1750. Some good violoncellos, made in the Amati style, exist.
349. CASTRO. Venice, 1680-1720. He used good wood; the outlines are clumsy, as the corners are disproportionately long. The F holes are ugly. He used red varnish of poor quality.
450. CATENA. Turin, 1746. A successful imitator of Stradivari.
551. CELIONATUS, Joannes. Turin, 1734. Of the Amati school; yellow varnish, good workmanship. (x)
652. CHRISTOPHORI, Bartholomeo. Florence, 1760. Some contra-basses and violoncellos by this master are known, which are excellent.
753. CIRCAPA, Tomasso. Naples, 1730. His instruments resemble in workmanship, varnish, and value those of Alexander Gagliano.
854. CONTRERAS, Joseph. 1745. He studied in Italy, and then went to Madrid, where he made a high reputation; a very handsome model and good workmanship. (y)
955. COSTA, Pietro della. Treviso, 1660-1700. He made good violins after the model of Stradivari. (z)
1056. DARDELLI, Padre. Mantua, 1500. He made lutes as well as fine viols, of which some specimens are to
12(w) Cassino, or Casini, worked from about 1665 to 1683. Violoncellos by him are known. His label runs, "Antonius Casini fecit Muttinæ, anno 1683," or, "Antonio Casini Modena, 1665." He generally used a manuscript label, in instruments of a large pattern with reddish-brown varnish. De Piccolellis gives a label of his, "Antonius Cassinus fecit Mutinæ, anno 17—."
14(x) His label is, "Joannes Franciscus Celionatus fecit Taurini, anno 1730." Another Celionati, Francesco, is said to have worked at Turin earlier in the eighteenth century.
16(y) Contreras died about 1780. A fine violin by him was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1878, in the collection of Prince Caraman-Chimay. His label is, "Matriti per Granadense Josephum Contreras, anno 1760." He had a son, whose label is, "Matriti per filium Granadensis Joseph, de Contreras, anno 1793."
18(z) His full name was Pietro Antonio della, or dalla, Costa, but there was a family of this name working at Genoa, Brescia, Treviso, and Venice, one of the family being named Agostino. Various labels are in existence.
