1190. STRADIVARIUS, Francesco. Cremona, 1725-1743. Son of Antonius; he worked for several years with his brother Omobono. Although the master-hand is not to be mistaken in his work, it is inferior to that of his father. It is incomprehensible why he did not adhere to his father's model. He selected an original pattern, with bold but roughly designed outlines. The F holes are quite different from his father's beautiful design, and he also used a darker varnish of inferior quality. About the tone of his instruments nothing good can be said. He died on the 11th May, 1743.
31709. The violin called La Pucelle, formerly the property of M, Glandaz, sold at the Hôtel Drouot on the 14th February, 1878, for 22,100 francs.
41710. The violin belonging to Mr. Ries.

181732. The violin belonging to Mr. Arkwright, exhibited in 1872 at South Kensington; it was bought by Signor Piatti from the Castelbani Collection at Naples.
191736. (1) The Muntz violin.
20(2) The Fountaine violin. For an account of this instrument, see Mr. Hart's "The Violin." One of these instruments was recently in the hands of Messrs. Hill & Sons.
211737. The Chant du Cygne violin, formerly belonging to the late M. de Saint-Sennoch, sold at the Hôtel Drouot, for 15,000 francs. This instrument bears the words, "d'anni 93," in the maker's writing.
