But these changes of elasticity in the stick form only a part of our problem. They must be considered in connection with the gripping of the stick at the one end by the thumb and fingers. This constitutes a further difficulty, as the stick during the stroke is continually changing in the nature of its elasticity, owing to the variation in the bend of the stick. These changes render the holding of the bow much more difficult than it would otherwise be.
The stick swinging backwards and forwards alternately, the steady command of the bow by the thumb and fingers is thereby disturbed.
This sensitive control is peculiar to the bow, being different in this respect from all other artistic appliances, such as the chisel in the hands of the sculptor, or the brush in those of the painter.
The problem, therefore, is to give greater evenness of elasticity to the bow, and to bring it under full control of the fingers and thumb. We must distribute the elasticity of the bow more equally, and thereby lessen the agitation of the stick.
This object can be attained by a simple and ingenious contrivance connected with the nut of the bow, invented by Professor Ostrovsky.
As may be understood with a little reflection, the nut plays a most important part in the construction of the bow. It serves as a means of attachment for holding, spreading, and stretching the hair, and as
