1PREFACE.
3The first Gazetteer and General Business Directory for the Counties of Durham and Northumberland is now offered to the public, with the hope that it will fill a vacuum long felt by business men and others throughout the Counties. Neither pains nor expense have been spared in the publication of the work, and only a generous support from all classes in the Counties will make it remunerative to the publishers, whose most earnest endeavors have been to make the work worthy the fullest encouragement. Scrupulous attention has been given to every item of information that the Gazetteer and Directory contains; but the publishers do not at all claim perfection so difficult of attainment in the compilation of a work containing so much statistical and general information. It is to be hoped, however, that the work will be found generally correct, and a true index of the growth and prosperity of the Counties. The publishers beg to tender their sincere thanks to the members of the Press and county officials, who have rendered valuable assistance during the canvass of the work; also to the business men and others who have liberally supported the work by advertising and subscription; and also to the many gentlemen throughout the Counties who have, with cheerfulness, given every requisite information.
