PREFACE.
different workmen, as well as different establishments, frequently proceed in a dissimilar manner in the construction of the several parts of musical instruments, which, when finished, may and do assume pretty much the same appearance.
Hence it follows that most works of this description must be necessarily regarded in a liberal spirit, as merely tending to diffuse a general—not specific—acquaintance, among musicians and others, with the subjects on which they treat; and, if they succeed so far, they evidently accomplish their purpose.
In preparing this new edition, besides the introduction of many interesting particulars drawn from the most modern works on the subject, I have had the advantage of consulting Mr. George Channot, the well-known violin maker of Wardour Street, London. (and nephew of the ingenious French officer mentioned at page 74), to whom, for his friendly remarks, my thanks are due.
JOHN BISHOP.
