1During the last ten years, a great number of instrument-makers, as well as joiners, have commenced making guitars; so that, since that time, I have entirely relinquished the business, and now turn over any orders which I receive to my sons, at Jena and Halle, who are much occupied in that way. The use of covered strings for the D and G is a small improvement of my own. In the guitar, as brought from Naples, a large violin third-string was used for the D, and only the A was covered.
3As I now hope to be more serviceable to the musical world in the construction and repair of bow-instruments [than in the manufacture of guitars], I shall henceforth employ my time in that manner.
