Record details
A reference digest, not a witness: the Register line on J. B. Squier (p. 42) ends “See Violinist’s Guide (1916), p. 39,” the James Juhan entry (p. 8) cites only “Sonneck, Concert-Life, pp. 123–4, 264–5,” and the Elias Howe line (p. 39) adopts the firm’s own 1865 founding date against Ayars’s documented 1843 listing. On August Gemünder the volume conflicts with itself: the Register (p. 24) says “trained by Vuillaume,” the dictionary body (p. 217) says trained “as a violin-maker by his father” — and every other source on disk makes Vuillaume George’s master. The WPA Bio-Bibliographical Index cites this work in its 1930 Macmillan printing; these readings are from the open 1920 edition. All six folios read off the leaves (scan leaves 22, 38, 53, 56, 243, 413), staged with the full-volume OCR at this project's archive

Everyone this source names
This document prints 4 names. A name found this way is the weakest thing this site records: the book names the person, and nothing more is said. It is not a line in a record — the lines that actually rest on this source are listed above, each with its own confidence. 3 of the names below reach a record on this site; lines from this source have been written for 0. The rest are names and nothing else — which is an honest description of the evidence, and an invitation: if you know one of these makers, we want to hear from you.

*Gemünder, August Martin Ludwig (Württemberg, 1814–1895, New York), gifted violin-maker, trained by Vuillaume, came to Springfield, Mass., in 1846, and was joined by his equally able brother, Georg Gemünder (1816–1899). Later they worked in Boston and New York, establishing a notable business, still continued by descendants. See art. — trade term as printed: "violin-maker" — surname inherited from the headword at line 8: "*Gabler, Ernest (d. 1883, New York), a Silesian piano-maker, came to New York in 1851 and in 1854 established a firm that still continues." — from OCR (read_as: ocr)
