Might's Further Contribution to Recovery
This new-style "Direct Contact Public Service CITY DIRECTORY, 'PHONE LIST and PERSONAL CREDIT HANDBOOK" is a special edition for Coronation year and carries many services added within the last two or three years with which few of the Toronto public are familiar.
Several years ago, to increase the efficiency of Toronto firms and so that their representatives could get in touch with a buyer, whether he be home owner, roomer, boarder, adult son or daughter,—a complete and exclusive 'phone list was incorporated with the City Directory.
Instead of a firm's agent having to send a letter, or go five or ten miles across town to locate a client or prospective customer who does not happen to be a householder, he can now get the 'phone number for any adult person from the City Directory, provided that person resides in a home in which there is a telephone. The new directory shows approximately 120,000 'phone listings which are given in no other publication.
A complete HOME OWNERS and TENANTS DIRECTORY, normally costing thousands of dollars in other cities, is included with the City Directory. It shows every home in Toronto in which the owner resides. Homes occupied by tenants are also listed street by street.
Government figures indicate that almost 90% of the business of the country is done on credit, so all merchants are vitally interested in doing business with that "90%" of their potential market which buys on credit.
The ALPHABETICAL and STREET sections combined show complete credit information for adult citizens of Toronto. For many years, business firms have had available credit data concerning other firms but not for individuals. Large corporations have been able to build up expensive "Personal" Credit Departments so that they could take advantage of the "credit market" which has developed within the last few years. For smaller firms this has been almost impossible.
Now, any business organization can secure credit information concerning adult citizens. Normally, a merchant asks a credit buyer his name, address, occupation, place of employment, whether he owns his own home, how long he has lived there, his 'phone number, and possibly, the names of his neighbours. All this information can be checked with the City Directory, and instead of asking the person to come back the next day for his purchase, he can, if satisfactory information is found, take it with him.
The City Directory new services make a very distinct contribution to the ability of the Toronto firms to compete with the firms of other cities and to safely take advantage of credit business and at the same time establish good-will for themselves.
