1PREFATORY NOTE
3The Bibliography of Virginia Larkin Redway, listing New York musicians, music publishers, and musical instrument makers, may seem a mechanical enough task to those who have never tried to make one; those who have studied the subject know that this is anything but the case. It requires patience and accuracy to complete a musical bibliography; there are also elements of detective research and scientific imagination constituting even more valuable assets.
5In 1917 Miss Mabel Almy Howe made a beginning in this field with her "Music Publishers in New York City before 1850." That bibliography listed about fifty firms active in this city. Mrs. Redway's list adds more than sixty new names to this compilation.
7This work will unquestionably be of use to librarians, collectors and dealers in their researches into Americana.
