COMPOSER TITLE, KEY & OP. GR. REMARKS
Brahms, Johannes (Cont.) Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 108 (Cont.) C 2 playfulness. A broad song of praise sets in and leads through a pp. passage (misterioso) to a lyric and affectionate theme. Syncopations bring back the first theme by way of dashing and virile forte passages. The development calls for forceful rhythm. The agitato requires all-consuming fire and sweep.
Concerto in D Major, C 3 Op. 77 (cadenzas by Joachim and Kreisler)
Allegro non troppo π…˜π…₯ = 108. Themes of loftiness and loveliness contrasted by themes and passages of great rhythmical strength characterize this movement. Of the numerous high points, a few might be mentioned, such as the subtle episode after the warm C minor theme in the middle of the movement and the reappearance of the D major theme after the cadenza, in its sublime, almost transfigured character. A joyful coda brings the movement to a glorious end.
Adagio π…˜π…₯ = 63. This movement has an outspoken pastoral character. The middle part builds up to a turbulent climax but returns again to peace and contentment. As so often, Brahms treats us to one of his indescribable codas. Care should be taken not to drag this movement.
Allegro giocoso ma non troppo vivace π…˜π…₯ = 82. A spirit of joy and virility permeates this movement. At times passages of playfulness and loveliness provide the necessary contrast. After a short but brilliant cadenza the poco piΓΉ presto in 6/8 rhythm brings this great concerto to a triumphant close.
