COMPOSER TITLE, KEY & OP. GR. REMARKS
Vivaldi, Antonio (Cont.) Sonata in D Major (Respighi) (Cont.) C [address hidden] ๐…˜๐…ฅ = 126, playful and and charming; at times exuberantly joyful. Requires great rhythmical control.
Wagenaar, Bernard Sonata for violin and piano C 2 The first movement, in the classic sonata allegro form, begins with an introduction, in which the basic harmonic and melodic motive is introduced. The allegro proper opens with an undulating D major subject of lyrical sweep. The second subject, in E major, is of a quieter character. The development section, which follows, leads to a shortened return of the first subject, which prepares the recapitulation of the shortened second subject. A coda referring to the introductory chords ends the movement.
The second movement is a scherzo in 7/4 time, composed as a "Song form with Trio," the latter being in 3/2 meter and of a passionate and melodic character; providing relief from the vivacious scherzo section.
The third movement is a romanza in the "three-part song form," a simple, melodic line, supported by warm and interesting harmonies.
The last movement is a lively and dashing sonata-allegro of approximately the same proportions as the first movement; thus serving as a suitable finale to a work in the larger forms of composition that is characteristic of recent times. It is rewarding and attractive in its frank romanticism.
