ances next fall, after the Bayreuth Festival. The singers felt themselves called upon to ask permission of Her Majesty, Cosima I. "By all means accept" was the edict from Bayreuth. This looks like the bloodless ending of a battle that promised to be long and bitter.
Prof. Richard Hausmann and the composer Victor Hausmann announce a new concert scheme, to begin here very soon. The two shrewd gentlemen propose to give matinees of works seldom or never before heard in Berlin. Considering the dearth of good concerts, the new enterprise should be a welcome addition and a brilliant financial success.
A Montreux paper says: "Young Raoul Koczalski, whose piano recitals are so popular in Geneva, made his first appearance there this season, on October 29. Following what strikes us as an unnecessary and extraordinary fashion introduced lately in Germany, this young gentleman announced that during the performance of 'Des Morceaux' the lights would be turned down, and the hall darkened." We have heard nothing in Germany of this custom. The critics would soon jump on such a cheap attempt to gain notoriety.
Ladislas Gorski, the Polish violinist and first husband of the present Madame Paderewska, has settled in Montreux, where he intends to teach and give recitals.
Hans Pfitzner's new music drama, "The Rose of Love," is to be performed at Elberfeld on November 9. The composer will conduct. Pfitzner teaches harmony here at Stern's Conservatory.

The Bohemian String Quartet is having its usual successful fall tour through Germany. Next week we are to hear them in Berlin. During December they will play in Bucharest, Sofia, Constantinople and Belgrade; January and February, in England and Holland; March and April, Italy and France.
In Warsaw there is talk of erecting a Chopin statue. Among the eminent Polish musicians who have already joined the committee are Sembrich, Stojowski, Paderewski, Hubermann and many others. French, Russian and Polish sculptors will be asked to submit models.
Franz Fischer, one of the leaders of the Munich Royal Opera, has been "lent" for two months to Barcelona (Teatro del Liceo), where he will rehearse and direct "Götterdämmerung," "Siegfried," "Lohengrin" and "Hänsel und Gretel."
Pianists should be careful. A man was recently arrested and fined here for pedaling without a license.
Rosenthal's European recital tours annually resolve themselves into an unbroken series of resounding triumphs. Advises just received from Budapest chronicle the extraordinary impression made by the Roumanian pianist at the first Philharmonic concert. It might interest American readers to know that while all the Hungarian critics acknowledge Rosenthal's technic to be as supreme as ever, it is mainly about his splendid musicianship and the beauty of his tonal effects that they rave. Thus the Pesther Lloyd says: "The tearful sentiment of the Larghetto (Chopin's E minor Concerto), so often degraded by Chopin specialists into hysterical sentimentality, under Rosenthal's hands sounded like a deeply affecting song of sorrow painted in colors of marvelous beauty." This is the least rhapsodical of the criticisms. All the papers speak of Rosenthal's "stormy" reception, and of the countless recalls and encores.
Rudolf Christians will not leave our opera in order to go to America, as reported by several local dailies last week. Christians is under contract here until 1903.
The program of the second Symphony concert under the direction of Richard Strauss will include D'Indy's symphonic legend, "La forêt enchantée," Tschaikowsky's symphonic ballad, "The Woywode," and "Dionysian Fantaisie," by Hausegger. The soloist will be Professor Halir, who is to play a violin concerto by the Boston composer, A. Löffler.
The soloists of the celebrated Gürzenich concerts in Cologne are to be Mesdames Dietz, Fremstad, Gmeiner, Brema, Schlegler, Geyer, Herzog, Hövelmann, Kraus, Osborne, Morena, Muriel Foster, Edith Walker, and Messrs. Felix Kraus, Van Rooy, Hans Schütz, Sistermans, Siewert, d'Albert, Pugno, Staub, Joachim, Thibaud, Willy Hess and Grützmacher.
Hausegger's "Barbarossa," symphonic poem, which met with a very cool reception here at the first Nikisch concert, was recently performed with exceptional success in Leipsic. Who is right?
"The Improvisator," d'Albert's new opera, will be produced in a few weeks at the Royal Opera. Rehearsals have already begun.
Conrad Ansorge is touring Germany. Newspaper criticisms from various cities express some disappointment at
