MUSICAL COURIER
ARTHUR CLELAND LLOYD,
nineteen year old composer, who has just won the major award of $1,000 in the E. W. Beatty Prize Competition for compositions based on French-Canadian folk melodies in connection with the Quebec Folk Song Festival to be staged at Quebec May 24 to 28. On this occasion a total of $3400 in prizes will be distributed. Young Lloyd, whose orchestral suite won the award, studied piano for a time with Percy Grainger in Chicago and is now under the tutelage of Harold Bauer and Nicolai Mednikoff in New York. 10as he appeared in Faust in various cities in Germany. Mr. Graveure has been offered the position of leading tenor of the Staditsche Opera in Berlin for next year.
DEVORA NADWORNEY,
contralto of the National Grand Opera Company, who was scheduled to sing in Cadman's Shanezis, on May 9, over WIZ, this performance being the big contribution to Music Week by the National Broadcasting Company. There was an all-American cast.
JACOB GEGNA,
violinist, who is planning to give several recitals in Europe and America, beginning in the early fall. (Brenner photo)
VERA CURTIS,
soprano, who has just signed a contract to appear for the third consecutive season with the Cincinnati Opera Company. Miss Curtis will have nine performances: three in Tannhauser, three in Walteure and three in Cavalleria Rusticana. She is a most reliable singer and can be counted upon for a highly enjoyable performance, whether in concert, oratorio or opera. Perhaps, this is why the soprano is so much in demand. 21GIL VALERIANO
(at the extreme left), on his recent tour of California, was a guest of honor at the meeting of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club on March 31. Other guests of honor were Otto H. Kahn, Irving Berlin, Carrie Jacobs Bond and Ivy Lee, all of whom are shown in the accompanying photograph. Each guest of honor was expected to do his bit, and Mr. Valeriano contributed some Spanish songs to the occasion. (Kug-Art photo.)
JOHN FINLEY WILLIAMSON, PERCY A. SCHOLES, AND MARTIN H. HANSON
At the invitation of Martin H. Hanson, manager of the Dayton Westminster Choir, the distinguished English critic and lecturer, Percy A. Scholes, squeezed seven hours out of his busy schedule to visit Dayton, during which time he heard the Dayton Westminster Choir, of which John Finley Williamson is the conductor. Mr. Scholes was the guest of Mrs. H. E. Talbott, the president of the Choir, and what Mr. Scholes will have to say about the work of the Choir remains to be seen.
