MUSICAL COURIER
JACOB DONT (1815-1888),
eminent violinist, composer and teacher, from a painting by Prof. A. H. Truck, his pupil, in 1886. Prof. Truck possesses the only diploma that was ever granted by the famous teacher. This autographed picture of Dont is said by his pupil to be the only one of its kind in America. The Gradus ad Parnassum, a copy of which the subject of the portrait holds in his hand, is a graduated series of studies which are to this day considered models of instructive violin literature.
TWO BANDMASTERS.
John Philip Sousa and Edwin Franko Goldman recently photographed at Joliet, Ill., when both were judges at the National Band Contest, which proved a very interesting event.
THE WOMEN'S GLEE CLUB, OF THE COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS OF SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY.
Seated in the center of the group is Dr. William Berwald, head of the composition department, who composed a cantata, In Old Japan, for the annual concert of the Glee Club recently. Belle L. Brearster, of the College of Fine Arts, has just completed fourteen years as conductor of the organization, which numbers ninety members. Harold L. Butler is dean of the College of Fine Arts.
ESTHER CADKIN AS MIMI,
a role in which she appeared recently when Boheme was given at Pallanza on Lago Maggiore. Following the performance the consensus of opinion on the part of critics was that Miss Cadkin has a fluent and beautiful voice and that she makes a touching Mimi. The soprano is an artist-pupil of Percy Rector Stephens.
MME. VINELLO JOHNSON,
from whose studios many promising young singers have emerged, will teach during the summer at her well known school of voice and opera in Boston. (Photo by Mildred Holt)
DELLA SAMOILOFF,
dramatic soprano, who returned recently on the S. S. Duilio from Rome, where she sang five performances of Aida and five of the Stabat Mater, under Molinari. She will rejoin the Chicago Civic Opera next season.
EDWIN HUGHES,
pianist, on a recent trip to his native city of Washington. He is seen in the Capitol grounds, after a visit to the Music Division of the Library of Congress in connection with the preparation of new editions of Bach works which will be published by G. Schirmer.
MANA-ZUCCA AND HER SON
(Left) A new photograph of Mana-Zucca, whose latest song, Lies, is attracting much attention. This talented composer's songs occupy a place on the programs of many prominent singers, many of the older songs still retaining their favor with audiences year in and year out. The smaller photograph is of Marvin Shepard Cassel, two-and-a-half-year-old son of Mana-Zucca, who recently made his debut singing ten of his mother's songs, with her at the piano.
