1THE HOFTHEATRE OR COURT THEATRE, DRESDEN.
3A magnificent Renaissance structure by Gottfried Semper, the architect of the old theatre that was burned down in 1869. It was opened in 1878 and is one of the finest theatres in Europe. It covers an area of 5550 square yards. The front of the building, containing the anterooms and auditorium, projects in semicircular form while the part containing the stage rises at the back to the lofty height demanded by the scenic requirements of the modern opera. The principal entrance is in the "Exedra," a castellated portico in front of the rotunda surmounted by a group in bronze by Schilling representing Dionysus and Ariadne. The entrance is flanked with statues of Goethe and Schiller. The balustrades that crown the facade on both sides of the exedra bear statues arranged in pairs. The interior seats 2000 spectators.
