ANTHONY STRADIVARI, born at Cremona, was descended from a very ancient decurional and senatorial family of that city. In the catalogue of ancient families who have filled public offices, which is preserved in the municipal archives of Cremona, we find a succession of members of this family who have been invested with the highest dignities, from 1127 to 1474. In 1127, Ottolinus Stradivarius was senator patriæ. In 1186, Egidius Stradivarius bore the same title. In a manuscript volume, existing in the same archives, and entitled Inscriptiones Cremonenses Universæ, occurs the epitaph of the latter (p. ccx, No. 1512), copied from the sepulchral inscription which exists in the Church of St. Laurence of the Olivite Fathers: it runs thus—
Egidius. Stradivarius. Patriæ suæ. Crem. senator
Summa. in Omnes. Munific. Liberalitate. Er.
Hic. Corpus. suum. Jacet
Obiit an. Hum. sal. 1199. 4 Id. apr.
Laura. Schitia. uxor. Cariss. P.
The same collection also gives the copy (p. lxiii, No. 378) of the epitaph of Guglielmus Stradivertus, an excellent lawyer, who died in 1439. This inscription
