1monogram and a cross, and sometimes this circle incloses only the initials, in prettily-formed written characters, "J. B. V." I do not know if any accurate record of the number of his instruments has been kept, but a ticket of his, dated 1829, bears the number 170, and as his work rose, year by year, in public estimation, I should not be at all surprised if the total number bearing his cachet exceeded 5000. He has been imitated to a great extent, and marvellously well in same cases. Many of his instruments are, of course, superior to others, and of higher value, but a good, sound Vuillaume, of his later make, would, probably, now be considered cheap at £30 or £35.
