1fifteen years settled at the court of Francis I. before this Giovanni Aldobrandini entered his father's office, quite a young man. It will thus be seen that none of these distinguished persons could have had, as Cardinals, any connection with Cellini, and that the artist himself had been gathered to his fathers twenty years before the date at which, according to the most recent expression of opinion, the violin is supposed to have been made. It is a very beautiful instrument, no doubt, but unless some explicit proof can be produced in support of the statements bearing upon its historical associations, I am afraid we must somewhat relax our belief in their accuracy. The story appears to be one of those romances which sometimes accompany the modern history of old fiddles as well as other curios, and the grounds of its acceptance have never been thoroughly investigated.
