1died in Turin in 1763, eighteen years before Polledro was born. The description of the Cremonese may have come from Somis through Pugnani to Polledro, but, however that may be, Polledro's portrait, fanciful or not, is the only one which we possess. The house which Stradivari bought remained in the family until 1777, and was then sold to some brothers called Ancina. In 1801 it became the property of a Signor Rocco Bono, in 1853 it was purchased by a Giuseppe Vigani, and in 1862 by a Gaetano d'Orleans, a cloth merchant. From 1786 to 1862 it bore the number 1239, the custom in Cremona apparently then being to number all the houses from one upwards, and not in separate streets. From 1862 to 1870 the place was call the Square of Saint Dominic, but since the last date its name has been changed, and the house is now Number 1, Piazza Roma.
3Antonio Stradivari had by his first wife six children—Francesco, born 6th Feb., 1670, died six days afterwards; another Francesco, born 1st Feb., 1671, and died 11th May, 1743; Allessandro, born 25th May, 1677, died 26th Jan., 1732; Omobono, born 14th Nov., 1679, died 8th July, 1742; Giulia, born 23rd Dec., 1667, died 7th Aug., 1707; Cattarina, born 18th Feb., 1674, died 3rd Aug., 1748. By his second wife he had five children—Giovanni Battista Giuseppe, born 6th Nov., 1701, and died in the following year; Giovanni Battista Martino, born 11th Nov., 1703, died 1st Nov., 1727; Giuseppe, born 27th Oct., 1704, died 29th Nov., 1781; Paolo, born 26th Jan., 1708, died 19th Oct., 1776; Francesca, born 19th Sep., 1700, died 12th Feb., 1720. Of this large family only two (who will be referred to in due course) followed the profession of their father. Other two, Allessandro
