1VIOLIN BOWS by NICOLAS MAIRE
2Paris, 1800-1878
4Apprenticed to Lafleur; a maker of excellent bows, often mounting them with beautifully inlaid frogs, making use of a floral sprig design, and using silver, gold, and pearl. He devised a metal upward projection, attached to the metal slide surface under the frog, to prevent the friction of the thumb wearing away the wood of the frog, occasionally found also on bows by Lafleur.

31We consider this one of the finest bows produced by this maker. The stick is octagonal, of reddish-chocolate color. Elegant head, somewhat in the style of Dominique Peccatte, with ivory plate. The original frog, with inlaid floral design in oval frame, similar to No. 1211. The metal underslide is brought up at the thumb also. Wrapped with silver wire, with leather thumb ring. The weight is above medium, and for a player desiring a heavy bow, it possesses exceptional strength and resiliency.
