1PREFATORY NOTE
3The Salvation Army Dictionary of Music does not aim at covering the whole field of music. It has little to offer on the historical and antiquarian aspects of the subject, and on matters of theory it presents only a selection of topics, for it has been compiled to meet the special needs of Army Bandsmen and Songsters. This aim has therefore determined the character and treatment of the articles, and should it aid these comrades to know their work better and to become more efficient in doing that work, the purpose of the Book will have been achieved although it may not meet the demands of the professional musician.
