PREFACE.
In presenting a revised and corrected edition of the Directory to the public, the publisher takes the opportunity to express his sincere thanks for the encouragement and cooperation he has received.
The present is the 51st edition of the Directory, the first appearing in 1789, containing 1,474 names. It was afterwards issued at different periods until 1831, since which time it has been an annual publication.
In 1846 the Directory was first issued in its present form, and contained 26,488 names. It now contains 41,868 names, being an increase of 16,377, or an average of more than 1,800 each year. With this advance in business and population, increased exertions are necessary to make the Directory a faithful index to the city.
The attention of the reader is invited to the Table of Contents following, and to the complete Index to the Advertising Department on the next page, for a general idea of the information which the work contains.
The Advertising Department has now become a valuable medium through which the Manufacturer, the Merchant, Inventor and Mechanic may communicate with the citizens of Boston, and with the business people who throng our Hotels from every section of the country.
