PREFACE.
As the remark is sometimes made, that, after a Directory has once been printed, its yearly compilation must be a comparatively easy task, and as occasionally an individual whose name has not been reported, and which therefore of course does not appear in the book, expresses great surprise that his name is not printed just as it was the previous year, it seems proper to state that, in preparing the information for the Directory, every house and store in the city is annually visited, and such other means as can be relied on are taken advantage of to collect as full and accurate a list as possible; and the names so obtained, together with such others as are brought in to the office, are printed, but no others.
This is believed to be the only correct course to pursue, for, although the permanence and stability of the population of Boston, when taken as a whole, and compared with most other cities, cannot be doubted, yet there is of course no surety that any one individual remains in the same position to-day, that he did even yesterday.
The chances of giving reliable information if any thing were printed the same as last year, simply because no change had been reported, may be judged of to some extent from the changes which are annually enumerated: thus, of 30,000 names in the Directory of 1858, only about 38,000 were found in the canvass for the present one; while, on the other hand, about 16,000 are printed this year that were not in the last year's book. Again, of the 38,000 in the Directory of 1858, who also appear in this Directory of 1859, probably not less than 14,000 have changed their business, place of business, or residence; so that finally less than one-half of the names in the last year's would stand correct in this.
The yearly increase of names in the Directory gives gratifying proof of the growth of Boston in population and in business. But it must not be inferred that the resident population has increased in the same ratio that the names in the Directory have, for two reasons: first, because within a few years very many names have been inserted which previously it was not deemed necessary to give; second, because that the increase in the number of business people is made up, to a considerable extent, of persons who reside in neighboring cities and towns, and who therefore would not be counted in a census of the city, though their names of course appear in the Directory.
The publishers renew their thanks for the readiness with which the necessary information has been furnished by those who have been called upon for it, and especially to those who, as advertisers or otherwise, have encouraged the work by substantial aid.
