PREFACE.
In preparing the Directory for the present year the returns have shown—what was hardly expected at this time—a considerable increase of names. Although this increase has of course added to the expense of getting up the Directory, and although the expense annually increases with the growth of the city, yet the price of the book has not been raised since 1853.
The Directory for 1853 contained 38,000 names, while this contains more than 60,000. That was a book of 440 pages, this of 700.
In that, the place of business was only given against the first partner of a firm. In this, it is given against each partner. Boston was then a city of about 150,000 inhabitants, in about 15,000 houses. By the census of 1860, it contained 177,902 inhabitants, in 19,874 houses. This territory has also been increased during the same period, to a considerable extent, by filling in of new lands and the annexation of Washington Village.
Notwithstanding the increased labor and expense in the compilation of the work, which these changes have rendered necessary, still the publishers of the Directory desire to keep the price of the book the same as formerly (viz. $1.50), for a year or two longer, and in so doing they are confident that they offer to the citizens of Boston one of the best and cheapest Directories in the world.
The publishers hope that, in consideration of this fact, the business men of the city will, as they have hitherto done, give a liberal support to so indispensable a work. If any feel disposed to make the last year's Directory do, because business is not as brisk as in ordinary times, let them consider that in such times changes are more numerous, and that in preparing the copy for this edition, some 12,000 names have been erased, and 16,000 added; and that the other changes, such as removals, dissolutions or formations of partnerships, &c., amount to over 10,000. It will also be well for them to consider that one or two blunders made in consequence of using a last year's Directory, may actually cost them more money than would buy several Directories.
We are not so vain as to suppose that perfection has been attained in this issue, for a long experience in Directory publishing teaches that it is impossible to collect, compile, and print so many names and figures without some omissions and errors; but we do feel confident that no work of the same character is to be found containing fewer mistakes, and we assure such persons as find themselves incorrectly entered, that they cannot regret it more than we do, and that special efforts will be made to prevent the same error occurring in future issues.
At the Directory office is kept a record of such changes as come to our knowledge during the year, and persons changing their business or residence are invited to give us notice of the same.
Besides Directories of the fourteen cities, which we publish, we also keep a full assortment of all Directories published in the United States, and some from foreign countries; and persons wishing to learn the whereabouts of a single individual from any of them, we are happy to accommodate, free of charge; and those wishing more information, such as lists of traders or manufacturers in different localities, we are equally happy to accommodate for a fair compensation.
