1CHAPTER VII
3WHO WAS THE MAKER?
5This chapter deals with a rather delicate matter, but as it is sufficiently well known now in Paris, where it occurred, to relate the story of it can harm no one. One day when I was in that town, M. Gand asked me if I would do him a favour any time at my own convenience; this was to go with him to a house to see and appraise a violin. I fixed on the following day at 11 a.m., and when the time came, we went off together in a cab. On the way M. Gand apologized for not giving me any particulars of the business in hand and carefully kept the conversation on other matters.
7After a long drive the cab pulled up at a large house divided into flats; we mounted to the first floor and entered one of the sets of rooms, where we were received in a very formal and polite manner by a tall, elderly gentleman. After a few minutes he left us and when he came back he had with him a double violin case. Opening it he took out the only violin it contained and handed it to me, remarking that this was the violin on which my opinion was wanted.
