3As all the different kinds of deal are not equally good, we must give a simple method of determining the sorts we should prefer, on account of their greater elasticity. We have said that deal and maple present great differences in the velocities with which sound is propagated in them longitudinally and transversely. To discover if two substances offer the same resistance to flexion, we cut rods of the same dimensions from each substance, and cause those rods to vibrate longitudinally. In the case of wood it is necessary to cut these rods parallel to the fibres or transversely, according to the direction in which we wish to test the velocity of propagation. Care must be taken to cause the rods to give the same nodal division. The velocity of the propagation will be in proportion to the acuteness of the sounds produced. The higher the sound produced by a rod the greater the velocity of propagation in that rod. By these means we shall be enabled to keep rods serving as types, and test the quality of the woods we use, by comparing it with these rods.
5The Bridge.—The Bridge plays a far more important part than is generally attributed to it. Its incisions and form have a great influence upon the quality of the instrument. It merits therefore all our attention. If we take a piece of wood, cut like a bridge, and glue it upon a violin, the instrument nearly loses its sound. It gets a little better if we form feet to the bridge; if we make lateral incisions in it the sound improves, which improvement increases gradually until the bridge assumes
