1These diagrams will give some idea of the position of the fingers on the bow as seen from the front and the back. Mitchell, in his "Lessons in Bowing," says, The correct view is that the forefinger, little finger and thumb support the bow. In producing gradations of tone, the forefinger takes the chief part. The little finger counterbalances the weight of the bow when the lower third is in use; aids materially in lifting the bow from the strings and carrying it, and tends generally to security and regularity.
3The student may be tempted to place the forefinger at too great a distance from the middle finger, to gain power. This is wrong. He should place the fingers only in accordance with the preceding directions. It is a mistake to suppose that any other method would give a better or more secure hold.
