1EDITOR'S PREFACE
3A book on the violin depends for its value almost entirely upon the qualifications of its author. In this case the author is a thoroughly practical fiddle-maker of lifelong experience, whose advice and instruction can be relied upon implicitly. He makes his appeal not only to people who wish to make violins, but to all who delight in using them. He describes, in great detail, the best methods of making a fiddle, and in the chapters on this subject and in those on repairing he gives the results of an unusually rich experience. A glance at the list of contents on the next page will show how fully the subject is covered.
