    1. this he went to Clement as assistant, and in 1823 started an independent shop. He worked mostly after the Stradivarius and Guarnerius models, and his wood and varnish are faultless. He was also a dealer in violins and undertook long journeys through Italy, Spain, Germany and Russia in search of instruments made by the masters. Chanot's son is also famed for his wonderful copies of Joseph Guarnerius de Gesu's instruments. The label used by Chanot is reproduced on Plate 15.
