    6. GAND, CHARLES-FRANÇOIS, Paris, b. Versailles, 1787, d. Paris, 1845. Son of Michael Gand and from 1807 to 1810 a worthy pupil of Nicolas Lupot. After Lupot's death in 1824, Charles took over his business and his workshops. He was unquestionably the most able French violin maker of his time. His instruments compare favorably with those of the old Italian makers, and bring high prices. There are several splendid specimens in the museum of the Paris Conservatory. The label used by Gand is reproduced on Plate 15.
